Time is Dwindling for Big-Time Free Agents!

It’s February 3rd, and there are still 2 big free agents left on the market. Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso, two of the biggest free agents are still on the market and pitchers and caters report next week.

Now look, both players have different situations, so let’s break them down.

Alex Bregman:

Bregman wants to go to Boston. The problem is, Boston does not want to go above four years on a contract and Red Sox owner John Henry is reluctant to go above that, or add more to the team. Reports indicate that Manager Alex Cora and Baseball Executive Sam Kennedy want to add a right handed bat, but the higher ups don’t want to offer big money.

Boston is one of the teams that I reference when I talk about that should be spending money in Free Agency. Boston is at the beginning of a window where they should be competing every year, and this is a losing move by not adding to a team that could threaten the Yankees in the AL East.

Bregman would be the perfect fit for Boston as a righty pull hitter, he would be mashing doubles off the Monster. It would be a match made in heaven, but at the end of the day, that’s not the reality. I think Bregman either goes to the Tigers or the Cubs.

Pete Alonso:

Pete’s market is seriously dwindled down to the Mets and the Blue Jays. Realistically, I don’t know where he goes. While Pete preaches that he wants to be a Met, but I am not too sure the Mets want him. The reason I say this is because when Steve Cohen said his comments at Amazin’ Day, he seemed upset, and frankly insulted by the contracts that Alonso and Boras want. Pete’s loyalty to Boras is costing him a potential reunion with the Mets.

Now look, the Mets have made moves since putting their foot down, signing Jesse Winker, AJ Minter, Ryne Stanek and Nick Madrigal. Andy Martino of SNY indicates that the Mets making the move, specifically for Stanek (as opposed to Kenley Jansen), keeps the door open for Alonso. At some point, one side is going to have to budge to make this reunion possible.

At the end of the day, time is running out for these players to sign deals. I think these two will remain unsigned into spring training, unless their markets pick up this week.
