The Latest on the Big 2

As spring training begins, there are 2 players still on the free agent market, Alex Bregman and Nick Pivetta. These 2 free agents still being available on the market on February 11th is INSANE. Both players are game changers for any team, so lets break down what’s most likely for the two.

Alex Bregman

Bregman is still looking for a 6-year contract, but it is unknown if he will receive that deal. Now, it’s been reported from multiple sources (Buster Onley of ESPN first), that the Cubs, Tigers and Red Sox are frontrunners to land Bregman. After that report, the Cubs were connected to Justin Turner as a “backup plan”.

Of the three teams listed, the team that makes the most sense for Bregman to land is the Red Sox because they seem to be the team with the most mutual interest. The Tigers are motivated to make some kind of move, but I have not seen anything linking interest from the Bregman camp to go to Detroit, and the only way I think he goes to the Cubs if Presley and Tucker have that much influence on his signing.

Nick Pivetta

Nick Pivetta is a fantastic pitcher, the problem is not him, it’s the Qualifying Offer attached to him. Pivetta has been linked to multiple mid-market teams, and according to MLB Insider Jon Morosi, he his close to a deal with an undisclosed team.

Who knows when (or if) this deal with an unknown team will be completed, but there is something on the horizon for Pivetta as Pitchers and Catchers are reporting to spring training.

Right now, these two free agents need to come off the board, we don’t need another situation like last year with the players who remained unsigned into spring training.
